Whirlpool Duet GGW9250SU0 – How Does it work

PURPOSE

Quick overview of how various components interact together on a Whirlpool Duet Gas Dryer.

Most Whirlpool Duet Gas Dryers, including Model GGW9250SU0.

THREE MAJOR FUNCTIONAL COMPONENTS

Although it seems daunting at first, troubleshooting and repairing a modern gas dryer isn’t that complicated because it really hasn’t changed much since its original invention in the 1950s.

Of course, modern dryers have many more features (courtesy of numerous sensors), but the basic concept of applying heat to dry clothes involve three things:

  • Heat Source;
  • Container to hold clothes and heat;
  • Exhaust fan to expel moist air;

In addition, many components are modular by design and easily replaceable, making the repair that much easier as long as we have a good understanding of how various components interact with each other.

Since bulk of the repair cost comes from the technician’s labor charge, we really makes a lot of sense to save money by doing the repairs ourselves.

CLOSER LOOK

  1. When a gas dryer is turned on, a computer inside sends a command to heat up the ignitor (a.k.a. glow-stick). The ignitor glows red (like a mini-sun), ready to ignite the natural gas. The computer also turns on the blower motor to generate negative air pressure. This is necessary so that we create air flow from ignitor all the way out to the exhaust pipe;
  2. The computer then opens up the gas coils so that a stream of natural gas is let out inside the burner funnel;
  3. When natural gas makes a contact with the igniter, the gas is instantly lit;
  4. Heated air then travels from the burner funnel to the air duct assembly until it is sucked into the drum via negative pressure generated by the blower wheel;
  5. It is important to note that a drum is not mechanically attached to the rest of the dryer (at least on a Whirlpool Duet GGW9250SU0 model). It simply sits on 4 rollers and rotates via a drum belt attached to the motor/pulley
  6. Moist air is then expelled via blower wheel out to the exhaust pipe;
  7. Sensors like moisture and temperature sensors provide feedback to the computer so that it can elongate or shorten the heat time and adjust other parameters.
