I love Home Depot. They have friendly people, vast selection of reasonably priced tools, lumber, etc. But, in all honesty, I cannot recommend anyone buying HDX branded tools (HDX is a “budget-conscious” in-house brand name tools for Home Depot which replaced another in-house brand, Workforce).
For example, there is a set of 65 piece screw driver set which can be had for less than 8 bucks (non-affiliate link here). Sounds good, right?
Wrong! Here are 3 reasons why friends don’t let other friends buy this screwdriver set:
1. The spindle separates from the handle with little force, rendering that screwdriver useless;
2. Screwdriver tips, especially Phillip’s head, strips too easily;
3. Ratcheting screwdriver does not stay locked in place, which can easily injure your knuckles.
I suppose you can stock up on these to hand them out as gifts, but do you really want to be seen as someone who is a cheapskate and does not care about his/her friends and family?
Instead, I would chip in few more bucks and get a Husky branded tools which is a category above HDX with lifetime warranties (Husky is another Home Depot in-house brand, but manufactured by Stanley/Black and Decker/Apex Tools/Western Forge).
I own and use the old set of Sears Craftsman screwdrivers (from late 1980’s).
BTW, HDX branded cleaning supplies are acceptable as most of them are made by Zep.
